About the IAVS Open Data Index
The IAVS Open Data Index is a searchable meta-database for discovering and registering open code and datasets in vegetation science. It helps you find freely accessible data.
What is Open Data?
In this index, "open" means that data and code are freely available to access, use, modify, and redistribute by anyone, for any purpose, with no more than attribution required. This aligns with the Open Definition maintained by the Open Knowledge Foundation.
Concretely, a dataset or codebase qualifies as open if it:
- Is accessible at a persistent URL (e.g., Zenodo, Dryad, GitHub, OSF)
- Is released under an open licence (e.g., CC BY, CC0, MIT, Apache 2.0)
- Is in a machine-readable or documented format
How It Works
Authors with a published paper (identified by DOI) can register and submit metadata for associated datasets. Submissions are reviewed by administrators before being made publicly searchable.
